Frequently Asked Angel Investor Questions

Companies interested in seeking investment capital from the members of Angel Investors Durham Inc., are first directed via personal referral or through our website, www.angelinvestorsdurham.ca. From here, companies can visit the “For Entrepreneurs” page to fill out an intake form and start the application process on Dealum. Upon receipt of their application, the company will be sent a notification email confirming receipt of their application. If the company is not within our geographic target area, they may be sent a notification of our inability to proceed.

We then proceed with a set of pre-screening questions conducted via telephone or online. The answers to these questions are reviewed by our due diligence lead and advisor, who then determines whether we invite the company to present at one of our upcoming screening meetings. Once a company is selected to present, they are contacted with a follow-up email with details.

The final step in processing an applicant is determining their eligibility for our monthly investment meeting. If the attending members from the previous screening meeting feel the company is both presentable and likely to be of interest to our members, the company will be invited to present at an upcoming investment meeting. The company will then be contacted via email with the necessary details.

If there is interest expressed in the presenting company by the members and guests at the investment meeting, due diligence with the company will be arranged shortly after the presentation. The online due diligence session is generally within a week or two of the investment meeting.

If you would like to refer a company for our review, please notify our office directly via email at elsie.faria@angelinvestorsdurham.ca. You may also direct the company to our website to submit their information: For Entrepreneurs – Angel Investors Durham.

Dealum is the application software that allows founders to apply for funding consideration, and it provides relevant information that’s used to screen for potential companies that may be of interest to our investors. It’s a next-generation angel investing and angel group collaboration platform that enables AID members to discuss deals and share documents.

Screening meetings provide an opportunity for companies to present online in front of any interested accredited investor members and sponsors in an informal setting as a qualifying step before being invited to an investment meeting in person. Most screening meetings will have several presenting companies. As a member, you’re encouraged to participate as often as you’d like. Founders will have 10 to 15 minutes to present, followed by 10 minutes for a Q&A period. This format allows our members to review the company initially, while also being able to pass on helpful mentoring advice.

Investment meetings are the final stage of company review and are conducted formally. There are usually two to three companies scheduled to present at each meeting—these founders have the opportunity to present in front of attending members, along with their guests. Much like the screening meeting, companies are given roughly 20 minutes for their presentation, plus a Q&A session. After each presentation, there will be a confidential 10-minute discussion for group members and guests to assess.

Our investment meetings generally take place on the second Wednesday of every month from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., and we meet at sponsor locations in municipalities across Durham Region. While you will receive an invite to each meeting, we invite you to also visit our events page to register and confirm your attendance. (We’ve included the current schedule for our investment meetings below.)

If you would like to invite a guest to an investment meeting, registration is required for each meeting.

To become involved in a due diligence exercise on a company you’re interested in, please make direct contact with our due diligence lead, Angelo Del Duca (angelo.delduca@angelinvestorsdurham.ca) or our administrator, Elsie Faria (elsie.faria@angelinvestorsdurham.ca).

Your first opportunity to become involved with a deal will follow the company of interest’s presentation at our monthly investment meeting, where you may signify your interest.

The first step is the signing of a term sheet with the company. Due diligence meetings will then be arranged primarily by the “deal lead,” along with assistance by fellow members who are also interested in the deal. For further details on what to expect and look for when proceeding with due diligence, please see the attached “Due diligence list.”

After you express your interest in a deal, you may also volunteer to lead the deal. Following the meeting, the due diligence lead will send a step-by-step guide on how to project manage due diligence projects, and help you get in touch with the necessary contacts. AID also works closely with our industry colleagues who provide us with assistance in the due diligence process.

We encourage our members to invite family, friends and colleagues to consider joining Angel Investors Durham. A $500 discount is applied to your annual membership renewal fee for referrals.
